About Program

This interactive Scratch workshop introduces kids to the fundamentals of coding through creativity and game development. Participants will learn how to use blocks to create animations, interactive stories, and simple games while developing logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through fun, hands-on activities, students will gain confidence in programming and complete their own exciting projects by the end of the workshop.

Workshop Outline

Workshop 1: Introduction to Scratch & Creative Coding
  • Introduction to programming and computational thinking
  • Getting familiar with the Scratch interface
  • Understanding the Stage, Sprites, Costumes, and Backdrops
  • Working with Motion, Looks, Sound, Events, and Control blocks
  • Creating simple animations using sequences and events
  • Using the Pen Extension to draw shapes and colorful patterns
  • Learning coordinates (X & Y) for sprite movement
  • Creating interactive stories with dialogues and animations
  • Hands-on Project: Design your first interactive animation and digital artwork.
Workshop 2: Variables, Events & Interactive Game Development
  • Understanding variables and how they store information
  • Creating score counters and countdown timers
  • Using random numbers to create unpredictable gameplay
  • Working with broadcasting and messaging between sprites
  • Adding sound effects and visual animations
  • Designing engaging user interactions with mouse and keyboard
  • Building the Color Pop Game from start to finish
  • Testing gameplay and fixing common programming errors
  • Mini Project: Complete an interactive Color Pop game with scoring and timer.
Workshop 3: Arcade Game Design & Problem Solving
  • Understanding game design principles
  • Creating player movement using keyboard controls
  • Implementing collision detection
  • Adding enemies, moving obstacles, and collectibles
  • Designing multiple game levels with increasing difficulty
  • Creating win and lose conditions
  • Developing either a Frog Crossing or Car Racing game
  • Improving gameplay with sound effects and animations
  • Learning debugging techniques and optimizing game performance
  • Mini Project: Build a complete arcade-style game with levels and scoring.
Workshop 4: Space Shooter Game & Final Project Showcase
  • Designing a complete Space Shooter game
  • Creating player-controlled spaceships and enemy sprites
  • Implementing shooting mechanics using clones and projectiles
  • Adding enemy spawning and collision detection
  • Creating scoreboards, health systems, and multiple lives
  • Adding particle effects, sounds, and game-over screens
  • Balancing gameplay difficulty for a better player experience
  • Testing, debugging, and polishing the final project
  • Presenting completed games and receiving peer feedback
  • Final Project: Develop and showcase a polished Scratch game demonstrating all concepts learned throughout the workshop.
